April - Louise Rothery

Name/Title

April - Louise Rothery

Description

April was a black Labrador born in Conantum in about 1961, at the house on Heath's Bridge Road next to the Logemans. A family called Buck was renting the house, and had two Labs that they showed. A surprise pregnancy combined with a diagnosis of mild hip dysplasia made them decide to give the puppies away to anyone who would have them neutered at 6 months, so that they could not pass on the dysplasia. We had April for almost 11 years, and there are probably many who will remember her. She was our first dog, and was mine more than anyone else's in the family. She was smart, gentle, and well behaved, and accompanied me and my sister everywhere we went. We all knew each other's dogs, and April was a favorite of many (I think). She loved children, whether we were sledding (she got rides on the toboggan) or swimming in the Sudbury River. She was afraid of cats (the cat in our house made sure of that) and I remember April being chased by the Fitzmorris's cat once - running as hard as she could, tail tucked, and howling. How embarrassing!

General Notes

Note

My parents built their house and moved to Conantum when I was about four months old in 1951, and we lived there until 1968, when our family hobby of sailing finally resulted in a move to Marblehead. But Conantum was a wonderful place to grow up, and there were a lot of kids my age. The sledding at the gravel pit in the winter, the woods and swamps to roam through, and the 4th of July parades were just the best.
