Cat's Cradle - Raymond Rea

Name/Title

Cat's Cradle - Raymond Rea

Description

Cat's Cradle is a short (3 min) animation that combines original xerox frames with hand drawn rotoscoped frames (shot on film) with digital effects. I started work on the original 16mm animation in the early 1980s but abandoned the project since it didn't come out exactly as I had planned. But I went through many many moves holding onto the film footage and, in 2010, revisited it and realized that it was much better than my younger self had thought it was and that I needed to finish it. So, like the cat's cradle configuration on the screen, the film turned out to be a dedication to the beauty of "failure", and a reason to hang onto work that you don't like in the moment. General Notes

Note

My family moved to Conantum when I was three and I stayed there until I was 18, living on Holdenwood Rd. I was a kid and a teen during a time where there were a _lot_ of us kids, and then teens, in Conantum. I have so many great memories of running around into the Conantum woods playing imaginary games as a kid, kickball games in West Circle, plus many spooky Halloweens walking around the dark roads in costumes. I am Transgender, and transitioned back in 1997/1998 in San Francisco, so this is not new for me. But many of you might remember me as I.Rea (no longer in use)
