Name/Title
Landscape Design - Elizabeth (Betty) CarlhianDescription
Landscape Architecture.
Integrated Landscape design created to maximize nature and privacy in a large condominium complex and to shield the grounds from the busy road
Betty married renowned architect, Jen Paul Carlhian, in 1948 following her receipt of a Masters degree in Architecture from the Harvard Graduate School of Design. She was in the first class of women ever admitted to HGSD, and would go on to have a successful career in landscape design at a time when most women were content to devote themselves exclusively to domestic life. Betty's practice grew steadily from doing residential plans for friends and neighbors in Concord to a full time occupation working with architects, developers and engineers, on plans for institutions and businesses in the region. She designed the landscape for Concord Green Condominiums. Her long list of clients also includes Concord Academy, Wellesley, Dartmouth and Middlebury Colleges: Rhode Island, Greenfield and Cambridge City Hospitals: Brown and Harvard Universities to name a few.
Betty died in 2015. I think she would say that she wanted to show that dense housing does not mean you have to sacrifice natural beauty. Careful planning for long term growth and ease of maintenance has resulted in an outdoor space that works for both the residents and the greater community.General Notes
Note
Elizabeth and Jean Paul Carlhian were the original owners of 219 Heath's Bridge Road (#22 before the numbers changed!) They moved to Conantum in 1952 and remained there until they passed. They both worked on multiple houses in Conantum as well as designing multiple additions to their own home and landscape.
