Description

Black and white photographic print showing a portrait of James Johnston of Heathcote. Written below the portrait reads "James Johnston - 1st Clerk & Treas Twp". A typed, paper label is affixed to the reverse side that reads "James Johnston the first clerk and treasurer of the township is as shadowy a figure as his portrait. Not on the census of either 1850 or 1860 he shows up only as a tavern keeper in Heathcote in 1855, and on the tax roll of 1862. He was the first clerk and treasurer of the township.".
