Scope and Content

Certificate of membership in the Freemasons. Cream coloured paper with black printing. There is a coat of arms at the top of the page and a border drawing of a chain with symbols of the Masons inside of the links. The printed words in the coat of arms are in Latin. The certificate names Charles William Maitland as a member of Barrie Lodge of Perfection. It is dated July 5, 1944. It is signed by the Secretary General H.E. and the Sov. Gr. Commander of the Supreme Council of the 33rd and last Degree of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonary. The number "1" with a circle drawn around it is printed in pencil on the upper right hand corner of the front of the document. Physical Characteristics: The certificate to Charles William Maitland is for membership to the Freemasons. The certificate has a graphic with a motto in Latin at the top centre and the text of the certificate is printed inside the black border, which is the links of a chain with a small graphic inside each link and a number. The first four lines inside the chain link border are printed in large, thick, lettering and read as follows: Supreme Council of the 33rd and last Degree of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Right of Freemasonary. The majority of the text is printed in black cursive writing style. The name, "Charles William Maitland", is handwritten on a line in black ink on the twelfth line inside the chain-link border. The city, "Barrie", is also handwritten in black ink. The name, "CW Maitland", is also handwritten vertically across the left edge of the paper. The text of the certificate is printed on the front side only. The Freemason's seal is stamped into the paper at the bottom between two signatures.
