Description: Common Name: Halotrichite Chemistry: Fe2+Al2(SO4)4 •22H2O Group: Halotrichite Location: Red Mountain, CA Description: Feathery ,silky, light tan hair-like crystals approx 1-2" long on rock base. PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS: Lustre: Vitreous Diaphaneity (Transparency): Transparent, Translucent Colour: Colourless to white, yellowish, greenish; colourless in transmitted light. Hardness (Mohs): 1½ - 2 Tenacity: Brittle Cleavage: Poor/Indistinct ,On {010}, poor. Fracture: Conchoidal Soluble in H2O, astringent taste. Transparent to translucent. Color: Colorless to white, pale gray, pale yellow, pale green; colorless in transmitted light. Crystal Data: Monoclinic. Occurrence: As efflorescences in weathering sulfide deposits and oxidizing pyritic coals, with persistent accumulations in arid climates; as a precipitate around volcanic fumaroles and hot springs. Association: Melanterite, copiapite, gypsum, epsomite, alunogen. Name: From the Latin, halotrichum, derived from the Old German, Haarsalz, for hair salts, in allusion to its common hairlike habit.
