Name/Title

Fossil Redwood Needles (cf. Metasequoia)

Entry/Object ID

96.01.078

Description

Preserved leaves ("needles") of a member of family Sequoioideae, the redwoods. Most likely the genus Metasequoia, given that genus is the most abundant fossil conifer taxon found in the region of the collection locality. Collected from "John Day Beds, Fossil, OR." Hopefully this means it came from the Wheeler High School locality, and not from John Day Fossil Beds National Monument (which would be illegal if taken after 1975). Clade: Tracheophytes Clade: Gymnospermae Division: Pinophyta Class: Pinopsida Order: Pinales Family: Cupressaceae Subfamily: Sequoioideae Genus: cf. Metasequoia
