Description

A miner's hard hat with detachable cap lamp attached by a flexible cord to a portable battery pack in red housing. [A] Skullgard fiberglass hard hat manufactured by MSA (Mine Safety Appliances Company). These helmets are specifically designed for protection in high-heat environments and are commonly used in industries such as mining. Interior labels put this model manufactured after 1969. [B] "Model W" Koehler Wheat electric cap lamp battery, manufactured by the Koehler Manufacturing Company of Marlborough, Massachusetts. This specific model Wheat electric cap lamp dates back to around 1939. The battery is encased in a self-locking red plastic case worn on the miner’s belt. A flexible cord traveled from the battery to the lamp, which was worn on a mining cap. The red case reads “Wheat/Koehler MFG. CO.”
