A carbide lamp, or acetylene gas lamp, produces a bright, white flame by reacting calcium carbide with water to create acetylene gas. The gas travels through the lamp to a burner, where it's ignited to provide portable light, and was historically used by miners, cavers, and on early automobiles before the widespread adoption of electric lightingCollection
