Description

Carbide powered pre-1930s lamp used in mining. 'Patent Pending' stamp indicates that this is likely are early example. Patents for this model were issued in 1912, 1913 & 1915 Chemical Composition: SiO2 Crystal System: Hexagonal System Description: Common Name: Miners Lamp Location: Oregon Description: This artifact is a "Just Rite" brand, small copper miners lamp. It is in excellent condition and functional. A carbide lamp, or acetylene gas lamp, produces a bright, white flame by reacting calcium carbide with water to create acetylene gas. The gas travels through the lamp to a burner, where it's ignited to provide portable light, and was historically used by miners, cavers, and on early automobiles before the widespread adoption of electric lighting
