Name/Title

Fossil Gastropod ("Bellerophon" ?)

Entry/Object ID

96.01.048

Description

One fossil gastropod specimen identified in the original physical catalog as Bellerophon. Bellerophon was a genus of snails renowned for the immense size of several species. However, the locality for this specimen is Topanga Canyon, where the oldest rocks are of late Cretaceous age. Bellerophon, and its entire family and order, went extinct in the Triassic. Thus, either the ID or the locality must be incorrect, except on the improbable chance that this specimen is a Triassic or Paleozoic xenolith redeposited in a Cretaceous unit. Phylum: Mollusca Class: Gastropoda Order: †Bellerophontida Family: †Bellerophontidae Genus: †Bellerophon
