Insect fossils contained within diatomite (rock made up with a large proportion of microscopic diatom remains) or diatomic chert. Host rock has a chalky texture.
Physical catalog says it "weathers to chert." However, if it is diatomic chert, that simply means the stone lithified when silicic ooze between the diatoms cemented the whole mass together.
Note that the Monterey fm., from which this was collected from, is marine in origin. This makes the finding of these terrestrial(?) insects aberrant. The diatomite source rock is congruous with the Monterey fm.Collection
