Description

1.5" long, basswood-like, leaf seed imprint on a beige sandstone. This imprint was left when a leaf pressed into soft sediment, and with the sediment surface deforming into the shape of the leaf. Fossilization happened after the leaves sank to the bottom of a pond or lake and were later buried by additional fine-grained sediments. Though the leaf completely rotted away, additional sediments and mineral filled the gap left behind, preserving the imprint. Eventually these fine-grained sediments became sandstone, shale or mudstone. Imprints often include some level of carbonization as well, where the carbon-content of the original leaf is preserved along with the imprint, once other organic materials are removed via decay or pressure. Clade: Tracheophytes Clade: Angiosperms Clade: Eudicots Clade: Rosids Order: Malvales Family: Malvaceae Subfamily: Tilioideae Genus: Craigia Species: †C. oregonensis Common name: Craigia (winged fruit) Rock and Mineral Data (Silica): Assemblage Zone: sandstone Chemical Composition: Si O2 Crystal System: Subhedral Type of Fossils Present: Plants Fracture: conchoidal Grain Size: Fine Hardness: 7 Quartz Lithofacies: sedimentary Luster: Silky Occurrence: Pressure: Moderate Rock Color: Dark Rock Origin: Marine/Freshwater Rock Type: Sedimentary Specific Gravity: 2.6 Surface Process: Not apparent Temperature: Low Texture: fine grain
