07.57.16Description
1.5" long, basswood-like, leaf seed imprint on a beige sandstone.
This imprint was left when a leaf pressed into soft sediment, and with the sediment surface deforming into the shape of the leaf. Fossilization happened after the leaves sank to the bottom of a pond or lake and were later buried by additional fine-grained sediments. Though the leaf completely rotted away, additional sediments and mineral filled the gap left behind, preserving the imprint. Eventually these fine-grained sediments became sandstone, shale or mudstone.
Imprints often include some level of carbonization as well, where the carbon-content of the original leaf is preserved along with the imprint, once other organic materials are removed via decay or pressure.
