This print by Jacob Lawrence was commissioned for the portfolio “Inaugural Impressions”, Lawrence initially created two paintings and this screenprint was modeled after the first one he made.
This is a scene of the inauguration from 1977 when Jimmy Carter was sworn in as the 39th President of the United States. Lawrence said about the people watching the inauguration that had climbed the trees to get a better view - “I see it as the most important ingredient of the election and the inauguration, and that’s the people themselves”
