Maureen Banner described their process for making this box: “The lid with the enamel is fine silver fabricated by Michael by hand soldering a fine silver border onto the fine silver, a technique he learned at the Cleveland Institute of Art from John Paul Miller and Kenneth Bates. This is one of our earliest collaborative works and is one of our favorites. I cut most of the fine silver cloisonné elements and relished the challenge of making the red look red on fine silver.” Many of the floral images that appear in the Banners’ work such as the red irises seen here – were inspired by the flowers they grow in their own garden.
