"Our painting is the preparatory sketch for not one but two elements of the four-part Fatherhood cycle in Sao Paolo. It is very likely that Crespi proceeded on this commission with a certain haste, first providing his workshop with an idea for the 'Natural Paternity', and then, reusing the same canvas, giving his pupils the ingenious idea of the 'Creative Paternity'. God the Father leans over the body of Adam, who is poised in delicate abandon, raising the right hand of the man he has created as if he were animating him. The pearly, sparkling skin of Adam's nude body stands out against a tangle of lights and darks, with the light source from above playing wonderfully with that raised hand."
