This form is nearly 30" tall, and is basically a tower that is attached with hinges to an irregularly-shaped base. The front of the piece was created by splitting lengths of wood into narrow strips, carving them each by hand, and staining them with a blue oil ink. The top of the base was made with plastic beads coated with resin and lined along the facing edges with lead strips. The text on the back of the tower is a riff from Sebald that I reshaped and reinterpreted. It now reads:
The radiant evening light climbed the steep terraces
of the abandoned garden
She asked what it was
I said I did not know for certain myself
I said How strange to be leaning against the current of time
I said Di morte 'angeli a noi siappressa Gia veggo il ciel discendersi
I said Briscia continuamente
