I first met Mr Kamiyama when I was visiting Tokyo in 1988 or so, and I just happened to walk by a gallery where I noticed some people setting up a show. I stuck my head in, and then when I saw the cool sculptures, I stuck my whole self in. It turned out the people were the gallery owner and Mr Kamiyama himself! The gallery owner spoke English and I managed to find out that Mr Kamiyama made all his work, even the large-scale pieces, in a small apartment! Although I didn't acquire anything right then and there, I did end up going back to Tokyo after I had started my job at Taipei American School and managed to acquire a couple of good pieces from his new gallery. I also met mr Kamiyama on two other occasions in Tokyo before he passed away.
