This excellent example of an "outsider" painting depicts Saint Antonio in a brown flowing robe, surrounded by animals at his feet, who are in turn surrounded by purple leaves. Translucent clouds and a red sun frame the saint's torso; the cloud on the right seems to make way for the saint's hand as he gestures.The eyes of the animals and of the saint are painted identically, except that the saint's eyes have lashes. The green mountains could pass for salt and pepper shakers. In the lower right corner, a red bull gazes out at us quizzically. The lovely colors of the ground are a beautiful contrast to the darker mountains. Ingeniously, the artist has painted the horse white a perfect counterbalance to the brown robes.
