008Description
One of two photographs I have in my collection by the distinguished photographer Chou Ching Hui, Salt Carrier provides a glimpse into the labor involved in mining salt in Hunan Province. Using the arc of large boulders as a framing device, Chou captures the salt carrier as she emerges from the mine, a basket of salt strapped around her. The woman's face and light clothing are set off by the blackness of the mine beneath her. The arms of the ladder are exaggerated due to the angle of the camera, but visually they also act to guide the eye to the woman's expressive hands, then up her arms to her face. At one time, Chou Ching Hui worked for newspapers and magazines shooting documentary photos such as this, but his most recent work is much larger scale and they are most effectively described as dark, complex theatrical scenes from some dystopian, dream-like stage performance.Inscription/Signature/Marks
