Taken from the poem “Descartes” by Borges (page 423 of the Penguin Collected Poems), this title translated means “I dreamed of maps and kingdoms.” The repeated figure appears to be dreaming even when absent, as on the left side ledge. Two of the figures are clay; one needed repairs after I moved the sculpture one day, but it’s stable now, more so than me. The underside has a stage that is one of my favorites, featuring a kissing cousin; a miner from the Upper Peninsula, Michigan; a Delvaux female reclining center stage; a portrait of the artist as a young boy; a glimpse of my Quincy, Illinois days, and a full moon complete with rowboat. I let lots of the substructure show through on this one.
