A friend asked me if the feet on this piece were alabaster. I was sorry to tell him that they are actually the ends of old plastic fishing floats that I found on the beach. But isn't it beautiful how new values can arise from perceptions, accurate or not? And new understanding.
To build this one I was forced to use the last "good" scrap of hinoki I had left, and I needed to make all the elements work. The materials I used include lead, which I hadn't handled in years. It gets a lot of bad press, but it is malleable and wonderful to work. The focal point of the underside are the 6 images in circles surrounded by beads, and I couldn't resist putting a younger-me visage inside one of them. I am sure a story could be constructed from the group.
