005Description
The back of this object is covered with circles I clipped from old receipts from Taiwan (fa-piao) which I cut in half and butted end-to-end along a line. I then layered the receipts in certain places and layered them again; the color difference comes from the fact that this part of the receipt changes color every two months. On the underside, I constructed a wooden frame that mimics the way they used to build interior walls in houses back in the day, with vertical studs and horizontal lath covered in plaster. I even suggested faded wallpaper on the plaster. If you like to read, you have probably read Gertrude Stein’s How to Write; for my title, I just took a page from her book, despite the fact that no one has ever called me a craftsman. Once again, the larger scale nearly caused the piece to get away from me, but as it grew it grew on me, and there are some little touches (such as the feet made of spools and the surface of the base made from pieces of foam from a children’s toy) that further endear the piece to me each time I look at it.
