Martine Franck, Painting by Paul Delvaux, Grand Palais, Paris, France

Name/Title

Martine Franck, "Painting by Paul Delvaux, Grand Palais, Paris, France"

Description

Martine Franck was a Belgian photographer, who was an outstanding artist with a unique approach to creating images. In this photograph from 1972, Franck captures an elderly visitor to the Grand Palais Museum reading the information card about the painting she has just viewed. The painting, by Paul Delvaux, whose signature style incorporated surrealist elements (as seen in this painting, where the naked female almost exits the picture plane and frame) makes an excellent backdrop for Franck's intention, which is to provide thoughtful, unspoken commentary about aging. The painted female, in the prime of youthful life, seems to gaze at her own futue, her gestures adding to the poignancy of the image. Franck was married to Henri Cartier-Bresson.
