For this poem, I kept in mind a photo of my grandmother in Norway, Michigan, standing in front of a six-foot pile of snow. My grandfather worked the mines there before moving to Chicago, but the Upper Peninsula is a place we visited every summer during my childhood, because my grandmother returned there after he passed away.
