Description

In the image, a large object dominates the picture plane, seeming to hover in a swirling, undefined space. Although it could be a building, there are no doors or windows. A strong light illuminates the construct, causing it to almost glow. Despite the text banner proclaiming ANTIPATHOS, the title of the print is "My Own Country," which seems to indicate that this is a visual metaphor of some kind. I am pretty sure that in some ways, Endi looks at the prints he made from this period and considers them primitive by his current standards. Even the color combinations feel a bit at odds, with the green text of ANTIPATHOS acting as a strong, somewhat unusual counterpoint to the oranges and yellows of the image. But at least one of Endi's enduring visual techniques is already at play, even in this early work. It can be seen in the way Endi uses the texture of the background to surround and encase the form, rather than running it "behind" the image, thereby adding another "edge" to the already dramatic structure.
