Description

I had started making a white base for a new piece, and started to look around my work area for ways to make it interesting when I got the notion of cutting the end off a brush. I attached it to the base, and one (end) thing led to another (end) thing. The former base then became the upper part of the object. The underside has a poorly-disguised puzzle, with numbers corresponding to letters of the alphabet, but I still like the composite, collage "portrait" I assembled from cutting up an old painting of mine. (The head is center top, at an angle from left to right. Torso and arms below.) It seems unlikely, but both the front and back of this object incorporate molded plaster forms I made. The front ones along the bottom are molded from very old Japanese stamped metal medallions, and the female figure on the back is from a contemporary plastic shell that someone discarded.
