Description

When Song Ming printed in color the inks tended to build up because he printed by hand, not with a press. In this image, Song Ming presents a loosely-defined landscape, executed in broad strokes and marks reminiscent of those van Gogh used in his drawings. Two broad horizontal swaths, one blue, one off-white, create the sky. The main figure itself seems to be sectioned off, and the mask-like face seems pensive. What was Song Ming's intention in portraying a second figure with a series of broken white lines?

Note

This image was taken from the Taipei Fine Arts Museum exhibition catalog, so the colors appear flat. The print is in a frame and so reflections and glare are a problem for photographing. I am including the image of the print in its frame as a secondary image here.
