018Description
In this poetic image, Wu Song Ming appears to be giving us a glimpse into his personal life, as well as his interior life. Dominating the print is a female figure in a summery dress; her face is obscured and one breast is laid bare. While her hands are hidden behind her hips, her large feet are very much present, but for all their size, the woman seems to be stepping lightly away. The house on the pedestal is clearly Wu Song Ming's Peitou studio. A ladder, a symbol of building or repairing, leans against it. A hand-painted slash of red color emits a swirling form that ascends behind the house and out the left side of the picture plane. Below the pedestal, a woman, ostensibly the same woman, is now clearly inside the house and stands naked, her form defined by dramatic light and shadow. A man's shadow, in all likelihood Wu Song Ming's, spreads across the floor toward the naked woman. Song Ming often used the device of a stamp-like image-within-an-image to infuse additional psychological or emotional content to his prints, and in this evocative print it is especially effective.Inscription/Signature/Marks
