Trees in Edmunds on the bank of the Dennys River, considered as models for the pine tree on the Maine State Seal, in images taken by John P. Sheahan 1890, several of which were made into postcards by Frank West and sold in his drug store on New Road Hill in Dennysville in the early 1900's. Recent images show the same trees over a century later.Context
Before a new State Seal was adopted, contestants were allowed to submit designs for consideration, the winning one to be used in the official seal. According to local legend, the artist who created the winning design used one of the pines on the Edmunds side of the Dennys River as a model. The tree is memorialized in a series of postcards sold by Frank West marked 1909.Collection
