Several views of the former Youth Center on Cemetery Road, in Dennysville, Maine. This building was originally the Box and Novelty mill owned by the Dennysville Lumber Company, but was sold and moved across the road where it became a Gulf Oil distributorship, and later served as a chicken house owned by Ray Higgins. In the 1950's it was turned into a community hall known as the Edmunds, Dennysville & Marion (E.D.M.) Youth Center. In the early 2000's it was sold into private hands and renovated as a studio and art gallery.Context
This attractive building, now privately owned as an art studio, was originally the box and novelty mill of the Dennysville Lumber Company. . Following the abrupt closure of the mills in 1930, the structure was purchased by the Higgins Brothers and moved across the road to serve as a Gulf Refining Company distributorship. Raymond D. Higgins acquired the property on the death of his father, M. Dyer Higgins, and converted to use as a poultry barn. in 1972 a group of interested local citizens purchased the structure for use an Edmunds-Dennysville-Marion Youth Center. The building was renovated and prepared for use not only as a youth center, but for community meetings, suppers, dances and other activities, including Boy Scouts, Girls Scouts, 4-H and a senior citizen's Leisure Club, before passing into private hands.Collection
