Photographic portrait of Daniel Morong, a Civil War veteran from Edmunds, Maine. His house is marked on the upper end of the South Edmunds Road on the 1881 Colby Atlas map of Washington County. As master of the "Judge Low" and other sailing vessels, he made frequent trips carrying cargo to and from Dennysville.

Context

A civil war veteran, Capt. Daniel Morong subsequently made a living as master of sailing vessels carrying cargo to and from Dennysville. He served as the master of the "Judge Low" in 1878 and 1882; the "Olive Branch" in 1881, and the "M.J. Laughton" in 1883-6, encountering difficulties in December, 1886, which led to the loss of the ship.
