Description

This gravestone records the deaths of Benjamin R. Jones, a noted surveyor, and his wife Hetty in the Dennysville Town Cemetery. Born in Quincy, Massachusetts he arrived in Robbinston in during the early days of the settlement, and subsequently moved to the Dennys River area. His Plan of Edmunds is reproduced as a separate entry in this catalogue. William Henry Kilby reproduced his Map and Chart of Passamaquoddy and Machias as the frontispiece of his history "Eastport and Passamaquoddy," published in Eastport in 1888. In a brief preface to the map, Kilby quotes Abigail Adams, of Quincy Massachusetts, who had known Jones in his youth, observing " I understand that Benjamin Jones has published a map of Passamaquoddy. I always felt sure that boy would do something creditable to himself."
