Double exposure photograph of José Limón dancing with arms and legs outstretched.

Context

Raised in Southern California, Barbara Morgan began her career as a photographer after moving to New York City in 1930. Her first book (which she is still best known for) is titled ‘Martha Graham: Sixteen Dances in Photographs’, a selection of photos taken of dancers from Martha Graham's dance company. In this photo, we see José Limón dancing to "Cowboy Song." Limón became a leader of the New York City dance world in the 1940’s, and eventually established his own dance company. He is known for his compelling choreography and the creation of the “Limón Technique.” You can watch him dance the “Chaconne” here: https://danceinteractive.jacobspillow.org/jose-limon/chaconne/
