Context

Many prints Pearlstein made during the 1960s to 1980s depicts this hammock. In an interview with Tate Britain, he said he "liked depicting models in hammocks because he loved the way lying in them seemed to turn the body into an object...They become suspended in a totally unnatural way." A common characteristic of Pearlstein's work seen in this print is the way he has scaled and cropped the image. The vantage point of this piece is very close to the model, which resulted in Pearlstein exaggerating the body parts closest to him. He often painted the figures slightly larger than real life, giving the figures a sense of power in the scene.
