Context

The Fang culture's face mask are used in different number of masquerades performed in the villages. This mask contains the same characteristics of masks that used for the connection to the ancestral realm. From the formal qualities it tells what the mask was used for. The white clay on the mask suggests that it is associated with the spirits of the dead because in Fang culture and many African cultures white represents the spiritual realm or ancestral realm. The white clay in this culture is used by the healers to make the connection to the ancestral realm.
