Context

This equestrian figure is a type of sculpture that is representative of the Senufo culture's warriors. The Senufo culture in the Ivory Coast had warriors who would fight horseback. These equestrian figures were thought to symbolize power. This sculpture is thought to be from the Senufo's poro society which is a society where the men in the culture provide the framework for social, political and religious activities in the community. These sculptures and different equestrian imagery could be found in poro public art forms.
