Context

This sculpture is a representation of the Yoruba god of thunder and lighting Sango. The double-ax blade motif is specific to Tango and represents a thunderbolt and also symbolizes his unpredictable power. The female figure is balancing this double-ax on her head and is kneeling. The kneeling of the woman is to represent the devotion to the god. This representation of the god is done in numerous variations.
