Landscape in the Marin Headlands of Northern California. In the foreground are tall grasses at the base of the hill that fills the background. At the bottom right, you can just make out a figure in the grass.Context
Clad in a camouflage suit of dry grasses from the Marin Headlands in Northern California, Maria Gaspar, as part of a site-specific performance series, disappears—in plain sight—into a landscape with unique histories and inhabitants that are often forgotten or made invisible. Known for its views of the Golden Gate Bridge, Marin Headlands, is a nature conservatory and home to endangered wildlife. Previously, the area was the site of military fortifications during the world wars, ranching and farming lands for Mexican, Spanish, and Portuguese immigrants, and was originally the home of the Coastal Miwok tribe, which struggled to maintain its existence in the face of colonialism and conquest. Gaspar highlights the way in which even seemingly untouched, rural space is structured according to historical, political, and social forces that determine what is visible and invisible.Acquisition
