Landscape view of shoreline. Blue and yellow sky with clouds and dark colored earth. Standing human figures scattered across the shore.Context
Thomas Hill was born in England in 1829 and came to the US at the age of 15, where he lived in Boston and painted carriages for a living. Later in life, he moved to California and became well known for his landscape paintings of the American West, making this painting typical of his work. He sold prints out of his art gallery in San Francisco for many years and was able to support himself through the patronage of many business and railroad millionaires. He had many notable patrons, one being John Muir. Near the end of his life, he worked out of a studio at Yosemite National Park.Acquisition
