Medium
Carved wood, found materialsContext
This carving contains bird’s-eye-views of downtown Chicago, including the Art Institute of Chicago and SAIC, where Dihle teaches. It is also overlaid with scenes from Martin Johnson Heade’s York Harbor, Coast of Maine (1877) and Antonio Vivarini’s Saint Peter Martyr Exorcizing a Woman Possessed by a Devil (1440 – 1455). Both paintings are in the collection of AIC and are personal favorites of the artist. The title Extraction refers to the subtractive process of carving wood away to form an image and to the bodily removal of, say, a tooth or a demon. Dihle's embedded objects have been added as a form of enhanced mark making but also suggest the possibility of their own extraction from the surface and their original context.Acquisition
