Context

Doctoroff was a Chicago artist who specialized in portraits. He drew/painted politicians, businessmen, and other important figures. In 1928, he was commissioned by the Republican Party to paint a portrait of Herbert Hoover. Though this portrait is of an unidentified man, it is still similar to Doctoroff’s style, with defined features, clear forms, and soft tones.
