Description

Black and white photograph of two ballerinas posing with African masks on museum pedestals

Context

As One I is part of a photo series featuring ballet dancers performing duets with African masks on pedestals. The black and white compositions present the dancers in choreographed poses amidst pedestals with the masks. For Fernandes, the series addresses power dynamics and hegemony, as well as post-colonialism, especially as it pertains to French appropriation of West African objects, and the foundations of Cubsim and primitivism. The artist is interested in institutional authority and the masks being stripped of their original role in dance.
