Context

Contemporary Ghanaian photographer Philip Kwame Apagya unpacks the individual desires and aspirations of his subjects through a new style of portraiture. Apathetic to the exploration of truth, his work embraces the lure of consumer and pop culture by balancing fantasy and reality for his subjects. “My pictures are more like proverbs or palm nuts, things to break up, something in which the meaning can only be unplugged if you know how to look at them. Photography has a lot in common with magic.” Apagya’s photographs feature painted backgrounds from local artist Daniel A. Jasper. Commissioned by Apagya to create new backgrounds every year, Jasper helps to maintain freshness with new places for the subjects to enjoy. Come on Board features a young woman about to step aboard an airplane at the Accra International Airport beaming with eagerness.
