Context

This poster was made in response to the murder of Matthew Shepard in 1998. Matthew was a queer college student in Laramie, Wyoming. His murder brought attention to violence against LGBTQ+ individuals on a national scale. In the aftermath, Shepard's parents became advocates for LGBTQ+ rights, launching the Matthew Shepard Foundation to promote awareness and support for hate crime legislation. The case also inspired numerous cultural works, including plays, films, and songs, which have kept his memory alive and highlighted the ongoing struggles against homophobia and violence. Overall, Shepard's tragic story has become a pivotal moment in the fight for civil rights, prompting discussions about hate crimes and societal attitudes toward sexual orientation.
