Context

Geers is known as a provocateur for his activist and controversial work that takes on topics of political power, violence, systems of control, and oppression as components of modernism’s legacy. His art, which is often direct and aggressive in its address, is meant to establish a sense of risk and create a visceral and emotionally unsettling experience. Domestic Affair, a readymade of a modified set of emergency lights, is a prime example of his predilection for security system products. By altering their context, Geers redirects attention to the political content contained in seemingly mundane objects, in this case emphasizing the racially charged fear and paranoia that pervades South African society.
