Context

While studying in Rome as a young artist, Markman became enchanted with the Ancient Etruscan maps he saw, and was inspired to make his own artistic world for himself. He called this place “Mukfa” and for decades created an expansive body of work, most of which was set in this make-believe universe. It is likely that this composition is also set in Mukfa. Beyond the Etruscan maps, Markman’s art is also inspired by cartoon strips (such as “Krazy Kat”), the Marx Brothers movies, as well as Broadway musicals. Furthermore, he studied at Yale University under color theorist Josef Albers. This excitement for color carried through to most of his artwork, though it can not be seen here. However, this etching is still typical of Markman’s style in its cartoonish, whimsical, and abstract fashion.
