Context

As the title of this painting suggests, this artwork refers to Barcelona’s Fiesta De La Merced, also known as La Mercè. Celebrated in September, this festival honors the patron saint of Barcelona, Mare de Déu de la Mercè (The Virgin of Mercy). The festival lasts four days, is held outside, and features a parade, music, dancing, and street performances. This painting portrays the initial parade, where large scale models of kings and nobles are taken through the streets joined by animal sculptures. Dean Meeker attended the School of the Art of the Art Institute of Chicago where he began his artistic career of working in both sculpture as well as prints. He then went on to teach for 46 years at the University of Wisconsin - Madison in the Department of Art.
