Context

In Chicago, the artist has said, “a new Roche was born.” It was here in 1979 that Roche Rabell began to hone the extractive technique for which he has become known today. His expressive strokes are scratched into the paint, simultaneously revealing and collapsing realities; a dialectic between the surface and its depths is equalized by the monochromatic blue layers which envelop and buoy the vulnerable infant at the work’s heart.
