In Passing I, 2017 Printed silk, armature Courtesy of the artist Ngô reproduced a section of a mural from the former Palais de Porte Dorée (Palace of the Gilded Gate, now the Museum of the History of Immigration) in Paris onto silk to create this backdrop and camouflaged shirt. This traditional mandarin shirt is created from a pattern based on the shirt worn by Nguyễn Thị Minh Khai in a photograph circulated by local authorities and informants. The shirt can be seen in a performance in the video Having Been Lost in Plain View, also on display in this exhibition. The performance refers to a time when Nguyễn Thị Minh Khai dressed as a man and worked as a shirt maker to avoid colonial authorities. To avoid detection, Minh Khai camouflaged herself within the fabric of colonialism similar to the way the shirt camouflages itself in the backdrop.
