Context

"This was completed in October of 1990 and was donated to the Hyde Park Art Center for a fundraising auction. During that period (1989-91) I was doing a great many chalk pastel portraits, mostly of film stars, some well known like Ingrid Bergman and others more obscure, but nearly all from films pre-1970. Later that year, in August, I had my first major exhibition "Pastels and Portraits" at Phyllis Kind Gallery in Chicago. Until it closed in the late '90's, it was one of the most prestigious galleries in Chicago and I, as a self-taught artist, was lucky to have been affiliated with it. I drew on shade cloth (which has a stiff, linen-like texture), then applied an undercoat of tempera paint before working it with chalk pastels. Not finding a suitable fixative, I simply built a frame around the picture on top of the hardboard, inserting glass or plexiglass on top of the surface. I did several dozen of these pastel portraits and sold most of them, but, for whatever reason, abandoned the medium in 1991 and never returned to it." - Anderson
